How do I place an order?
After you've selected the pictures you want to print, follow the instructions on each of the order pages to fill in print size, quantity, shipping information and billing information.

Go to top

What do you do with the personal information I supply during ordering?
We only use your personal information to process your orders and to provide you with high-quality customer service (should you ever need it).

Go to top

Are you using cookies?
We never save personal information, such as your credit card number, in cookies. We only use cookies to manage your ordering session.

Go to top

Is ordering secure?
Absolutely. We use industry standard secure server software (SSL) for all photo orders. It encrypts all of your personal information, including credit card number, name, and address, so that it cannot be read as the information travels over the Internet.

Go to top

How do I know if my order has been processed or shipped?
After you submit an order, you will receive an email confirmation that includes the order number and details. After the order ships, you will also receive another email confirming shipment.

Go to top

How long does it take to get my prints?
It typically takes us less than 24 hours to process and ship your prints. Once done, we'll send you an email to tell you that your order has shipped. Depending on the shipping method you selected and the country the prints are being shipped to, your order should arrive several days after you receive the order shipped email.

What technology is used to print my photos?
Shutterfly uses state-of-the-art silver-halide chemical processing and digital printers designed for professional photo finishing. This process, combined with Shutterfly's proprietary VividPics® imaging technology, gives beautiful, high-quality prints.

What type of paper do you use?
We use real photographic paper - the same type of paper, with the same quality, fade resistance and durability, that you get when you develop 35mm film.

Do you do anything to my photos before printing them?
If your picture size does not exactly match the dimensions of the print size you chose, your picture will be cropped to fit. We also apply our VividPics technology to true the colors, enhance contrast and brighten underexposed shots.

Do you crop pictures? What if my picture is a non-standard size?
In most cases, we will crop your picture to fit the dimensions of the print size you chose. If more than 20% would be cropped (for instance, the picture is square or panoramic), then the entire picture will be printed, with white borders to fill in the empty space. Note that any non-panoramic photo taken with a digital camera will never be cropped more than 20%, and that the photos taken with most of today's common digital cameras will typically be cropped no more than 8-11% (depending on the camera and the print size you choose).

What image formats do you accept?
Prints can only be made from JPEG images (.jpg or .jpeg image files).

What does "image resolution" mean?
Image resolution refers to the number of pixels in a picture. It's measured as width by height, such as "1600 pixels by 1200 pixels." The higher the resolution the clearer the prints, however, high resolution won't help if the photography conditions are poor.

What image resolution do I need to make high-quality prints?
The higher the resolution the better. However, today's megapixel or better cameras are fine for most print sizes. Here's some general rules of thumb for resolution versus print quality:

Picture Resolution Maximum Recommended Print Size
Less than 640 x 480 OK for Wallets
640 x 480 Great for Wallets, OK for 4 x 6, but could be a little grainy
742 x 558 Great for Wallets, Good for 4 x 6, OK for 5 x 7
1128 x 848 or greater Great for Wallets, 4 x 6 and 5 x 7, Good for 8 x 10

It's also important to note that the quality of the photography strongly affects the quality of the prints. Well taken shots with proper lighting, white balance and focus can yield great prints even at sub 640 x 480 resolutions. Shots taken in poor conditions can result in unhappy prints even if the pictures are high resolution.

Can I print scanned pictures?
Yes. After you scan the photo you need to save them as, or convert them to, JPEG format. We recommend that you scan at 200 dpi or greater. More importantly, when you save as, or convert to JPEG, you need to keep the JPEG quality high (i.e, minimize the JPEG compression). This will keep the high color depth (lots and lots of colors!) that is needed for great prints. The resulting files will be large (several hundred kilo bytes at least), but the resulting prints will more closely match the original picture.
